Was it passion and determination or just frenetic activity and good karma? We'll never know. But, we did everything we could to get jobs including setting up recruitment files with ISS and CIS and creating profiles on TIE online. Once this was done, we scoured the Internet for email addresses to which we disseminated hundreds of inquiry letters. In these inquiry letters we included a link to our Teach Abroad Website which contained all our resumes, transcripts, letters of recommendation, photos, and everything else a principal might be interested in viewing. Then, once we learned that the ASOMEX recruitment fair was cancelled, thus reducing our exposure to schools in Mexico, we started calling the schools we were interested in.
We had a great interview in Puerto Vallarta in December and were told that we had positions there if there were any openings. Then we waited. And waited. No calls from Puerto Vallarta. But then, to our pleasant surprise, Cancun began checking our references. Then, we got a phone call one evening from the Principal of IAS Cancun. She had thoroughly checked our references, so all that remained was for her to determine our commitment. And believe you me, we are committed to this endeavor. She recognized that and we received the offer a few days later via email.
Cancun! Can you believe it? The Yucatan peninsula has crystal white sand beaches, Mayan ruins, quaint towns, and jungles to explore. We can't wait.
But there are miles to go before our adventure begins. We have to rent our house, pack up our personal stuff, board our dog, cancel all our utilities, and sell or lease our cars. Then, once in Cancun, we have to find a home to rent, set up a bank account, buy a car, buy cell phones and have a bundle of fun before it's back to school time in mid-August.
